History

AIR Vividh Bharati was officially launched on October 3, 1957, by All India Radio (also known as Akashvani), which operates under the state-owned public broadcaster Prasar Bharati. The service was conceptualized and introduced primarily as a strategic response to the growing popularity of Radio Ceylon, a neighboring broadcaster that had successfully captured the Indian audience by playing Hindi film music and commercial programming. At its inception, Vividh Bharati was designed to bring popular film tunes and light entertainment back to the national airwaves. While it initially launched as a non-commercial platform, the network later introduced advertisements on an experimental basis, officially becoming All India Radio's first commercial broadcasting service in November 1967. Over the decades, it expanded its reach through a vast network of captive earth stations and local down-links, eventually broadcasting from its main production centre in Mumbai to cover nearly the entire Indian population.

Throughout its broadcasting history, the station has maintained a strong focus on Hindi film music, lighthearted skits, and cultural programmes. Vividh Bharati became culturally significant for generations of listeners through iconic past broadcasts such as "Hawa Mahal," which featured popular radio plays, and "Vishesh Jaimala," a special musical show dedicated to the armed forces that occasionally featured prominent Bollywood celebrities as guest hosts. Other legacy shows like "Sangeet Sarita" and "Bhule Bisre Geet" cemented the station's status as an archive of India's musical heritage. As broadcasting technology evolved, the network transitioned from relying heavily on short-wave relays to adopting digital transmission, satellite uplinks, and Direct-To-Home (DTH) platforms. Today, making its live radio feed available as an online stream represents the latest milestone in the station's evolution, allowing its massive archive of historic film tracks to reach a global digital audience.
